App Olympics 2012 in Tallinn

Posted by Argo L February - 13 - 2012 0 Comment

On the last minute I was contacted by Alex Eckhart at BeMyApp. If Tallinn could participate on the App-Olympics? Well…its a short notice…but hell yeah! Lets do it! We had a quick midnight skype -session and now I am busy finding the participants, the venue, the supporters etc. Knowing the stubborn mind of my country-men, I don ‘t hesitate that anyone that shows up that weekend wouldn ‘t go all in to make the best mobile app ever! But appart from that having skype-conferences and live-updates from 8 different locations in Europe and US doing the same thing at the same time between the 24th-26th of February- SOUNDS LIKE FUN to me! I will keep you posted when the official web-channels are up! More information about the event: http://bemyapp.com/

Fighting hangover

Posted by Argo L January - 26 - 2012 0 Comment

I found this post by occasion. I have not had a hangover for awhile myself, but I still remember some of my worst ones.  The principles are simple: make sure that you get loads of WATER,  you probably feel an urge to have loads of junkfood(fat, carbs etc), move as much as you can or try to engage yourself in any activity that makes you sweat and heart pumping(to get the toxins out of your system faster). I am sure all of you have their own “hangover-rituals” and foods that help you get through. Feel free to share them if you dare.

Most hangover “remedies” simply attend to one or more of the symptoms and don’t really provide a cure as such. The hangover won’t stop until the alcohol is out of your system, but here’s a few things that will ease the suffering a bit:

  • Berocca - Puts the vitamin B back in, as well as the big glass of water it’s mixed with. It’s probably best to do this before you go out.
  • Coke - Fizz for the nausea, liquid for the dehydration, and a caffeine and sugar hit to make you feel a bit more lively.
  • Coffee - Same as Coke but without the bubbles to help ease the nausea. Try it with honey instead of sugar since the fructose is absorbed quicker than the sucrose in normal sugar, and it’s better for you.
  • Ginseng - It’s been noted that since caffeine is a diuretic like alcohol, it can actually make the dehydration worse, so try the herbal equivalent instead.
  • Vegemite On Toast - Something in your stomach is good, and salty is even better. Plus you get a Vitamin B top up. The same reasons also make peanut butter a good choice, but the oily nature might make some sensitive stomachs feel a bit yucky. If you do try try this one, skip the butter and just have dry toast.
  • Cold Pizza - Who knows, but it seems to work.
  • Aspirin - Simply attends to the headache and does nothing for the level of alcohol in your system. Don’t take them before you go to bed.
  • Bananas - Sugar in the form of fructose, and potassium, which is one of the things you lose lots of when you drink. Bananas are also a natural antacid to help with the nausea, and are high in magnesium which can help relax those pounding blood vessels causing that hangover headache. For a variety of reasons try a peanut butter, honey and banana sandwich on white bread.
  • Vitamin C - Another thing the alcohol takes out that you’re advised to put back in as soon as possible. Orange juice, tomato, a 600mg Vitamin C tablet – doesn’t matter, just do it.
  • A Hot Bath(or sauna, which is even better) - The heat will sweat out the toxins that are causing all the problems. You’ll feel a bit woozy at first but go with it and you’ll feel better afterwards.
  • Sauerkraut - It makes some sense – the acid/nadh balance and the nutritional value – but from first hand experience it works rediculously well. I’ve seen it work in the most extreme cases.” If you can’t bring yourself to eat the actually chunky bits, try sauerkraut juice (out of the sauerkraut bottle) mixed with tomato juice, or a good helping of Sauerkraut Hangover Soup(when in Eastern Europe order Soljanka and you will be cured).

How to organize a street party

Posted by Argo L January - 18 - 2012 0 Comment

There are some good pages covering this on the web. I added some good links in the end of the post.

An Application Form and Conditions for Street Parties on the Public Highway requiring a Road Closure can be found by using this link.  The form contains further advice and conditions.

Street Party Guidance

Street Party – a ‘street’ party is a fun event designed to bring together the residents of a particular road or local community. A street party is not advertised to the wider public and no commercial activities take place.

I want to organise a party – what do I do?

  • The first thing to do is to talk to your neighbors and find out whether there is sufficient support for the event to go ahead.
  • Then  find a suitable venue.  It may be possible to hold the party in the street, subject to a road closure order (see below), but not all roads will be suitable. It may be easier to organise an event on a local playing field, open space or adjacent to a building such as a community hall, so that you can move the event indoors if the weather is bad.  You will need to ask the owners for permission.
  • Once you know your neighbours are happy and you have a suitable venue, you will need to set a date and consider if it is necessary to contact the Council.

PayPal and NFC payments

Posted by Argo L January - 10 - 2012 0 Comment

Online payments giant PayPal has been against NFC as a mobile payments platform, but that position may be changing. At a New York event where they are showing off mobile payment solutions including a tap-to-pay NFC setup.

WE’VE REVISED OUR TIME FRAME

The company historically insisted that app-based and web-based payments solutions would suffice, while NFC payments would take between three to five years to become stable and developed enough to be a viable payment solution.

GigaOm reports that the company will show off a tap-based NFC payment solution to retailers at an event in New York, alongside the other payment initiatives they’re driving. Sam Shrauger, who is the vice president of Global Product and Design at PayPal says: ‘If NFC gets to the point where retailers are adopting it at the point of sale and consumers are showing a propensity for using it, we will enable it, but we are not depending on it.’ Shrauger added that: ‘There’s no time frame for NFC, it just depends on the way the market moves. It could be next year or in five years.’

MOBILE SOLUTIONS HEATING UP

In the interest of prudence, PayPal has already developed an NFC payments solution in case it needs fast deploying. And given the rapid rate mobile payments solutions are developing at, coupled with the different strategies different companies are adopting and the challenges the industry is tackling on a daily basis, it’s only prudent they have a solution ready to deploy if NFC does, indeed, catch on.

WHAT IS NFC?

It is basically technology that allows ‘two devices embedded with chips to snuggle up together and transmit small pieces of data between each other when they are in close proximity. This data can be credit card information, coupons, tickets…you get the idea.’

The year of the Water Dragon

Posted by Argo L December - 31 - 2011 0 Comment

According to Chinese zodiac its the year of the Water Dragon. Dragon is a furios, viscous and smart creature of the night.

Occupying the 5th position in the Chinese Zodiac, the Dragon is the mightiest of the signs. Dragons symbolize such character traits as dominance and ambition. Dragons prefer to live by their own rules and if left on their own, are usually successful. They’re driven, unafraid of challenges, and willing to take risks. They’re passionate in all they do and they do things in grand fashion. Unfortunately, this passion and enthusiasm can leave Dragons feeling exhausted and interestingly, unfulfilled.

While Dragons frequently help others, rarely will they ask for help. Others are attracted to Dragons, especially their colorful personalities, but deep down, Dragons prefer to be alone. Perhaps that is because they’re most successful when working alone. Their preference to be alone can come across as arrogance or conceitedness, but these qualities aren’t applicable. Dragons have tempers that can flare fast! Dragons are compatible with the Monkey or Rat and incompatible with the Ox and Goat, which means that people born under the signs of Monkey or Rat (in addition to Dragons themselves) can expect to have a successful year!
